Why implement internet access control in a company?
More and more employees need the internet to perform their daily tasks, using systems, emails, spreadsheets, and other activities that are optimized with internet access.
Without any kind of control or policy regarding internet access, it is common for employees to use work time to access social networks, YouTube videos, WhatsApp, and other websites outside the scope of their work.
When a complete internet access management system is implemented, several benefits are noticeable within the first few days:
- Greater productivity and quality in tasks
- Focus on company tasks
- Protection against websites considered harmful.
- Fewer occurrences of problems with viruses and malware
- Faster internet through proper network usage
- Monitoring and information about internet usage
- Lower equipment maintenance costs
You can delve deeper into the topic by reading the article "8 Benefits of Internet Access Control in Companies" on our blog.
Some solutions
Using solutions to manage access and block websites considered harmful or outside the scope of work allows many companies to optimize the productivity of their teams connected to the internet, reducing problems and maintenance caused by malware and malicious websites.
Among the most common are Cisco Umbrella (OpenDNS), Lumiun Box , DNS Filter , Fortinet FortiGate , pfSense , and the use of a proxy on a Linux server. However, the solutions differ considerably from each other and do not always adapt to all the diverse needs found in a business environment.
Interface, technical support, reports, and functionalities are decisive factors when choosing a tool for managing internet access in companies.
Below, you will see a comparison table with the main characteristics and differences between the leading solutions on the market.

5 steps to total internet access management
The waste of time using the internet during working hours has generated discomfort for managers. Conversely, the use of internet access control has been in high demand, especially after several (frustrated) attempts with inefficient or expensive solutions.
We created this guide to show that there is an effective, easy, and low-cost solution geared towards small and medium-sized businesses, which is the case with Lumiun Box.
On the following pages, you will see 5 simple steps for total internet access management with Lumiun Box and quickly understand the main features of the solution.
Ready? Let's go!
First step: Install the Lumiun Box
The first step is to install the Lumiun Box on your network.
The equipment should be deployed between the network gateway (usually the internet router) and the rest of the internal network equipment (usually a switch).
In this way, all data traffic between your local network and the internet will pass through the Lumiun Box.

Second step: Register users and define groups
The second step is to access the Lumiun Box control panel in the cloud and begin registering the groups.
Groups are structures used to unify a set of equipment or users, separating them by company sectors, internet access characteristics, or requirements that the manager or IT professional deems necessary.
After creating and defining the groups, it is possible to drag equipment and users to their respective groups and create access policies according to the needs of each.

Tips for organizing groups
By sector:
- Marketing Group
- Commercial Group
- Financial Group
- Board of Directors Group
- Customer Group
By blocking levels:
- Released Group
- Moderate Group
- Blocked Group
By device type:
- Cell phones
- Computers
- Servers
- Cameras
Defining work groups within the company is very important for efficiently managing internet access for teams. Therefore, when defining these groups, keep in mind the needs and objectives of each group.
Third step: Define access rules
It's time to define the access policies for the groups created in the previous step. With Lumiun Box properly installed on the company network and all groups defined, it's possible to control internet access by applications (Facebook, WhatsApp, Banco do Brasil, etc.), website categories (social networks, news portals, pornography, games and betting, etc.) and specific websites.
The rules can be defined and applied quickly and easily, without requiring technical knowledge. However, if you have any questions, the Lumiun Box support team will always be available to assist with any configuration.
Applications
In the Lumiun Boxcontrol panel, an Application represents a website or internet service that has multiple domains and addresses, and in Lumiun Box, access and viewing rules can be configured simply and efficiently.
The panel displays the main and most frequently used applications, such as Facebook, for example. Below the application's icon, there are buttons to allow, block, and set a specific time for access.

Website categories
Each website, or domain, is assigned a category from among dozens of existing ones. These categories are automatically determined based on the website's content. A website like "youtube.com," for example, belongs to the "Audio, video, and entertainment" category.
This way, it's possible to organize website categories more easily, also facilitating the access rules that the company wants to implement on its network.
With Lumiun Box, it's possible not only to allow and block access to specific categories, but also to define times when access to these categories will be available.

Specific sites
In the Lumiun Box access control panel, it is also possible to manage access to specific websites, such as local news portals or other sites that the person responsible for the filters deems necessary. These sites can be viewed and defined after an access analysis is performed in the Lumiun Boxaccess reports, which you will see later.

Fourth step: Add security
The internet helps professionals and companies perform their tasks more productively and efficiently. However, many problems can arise from careless and uninformed use of the internet. Knowing this, cybercriminals use clever strategies to lure unsuspecting users into cyberattacks. Therefore, maintaining the security of company data is always a priority.
Last year's cyberattack statistics showed us that Brazil is one of the biggest targets of cyberattacks in the Americas , and therefore deserves attention.
Several configuration options for strengthening network security can be found in the Lumiun Box. The main one is restricting access to potentially insecure websites that could somehow threaten the security of company information.
In the "Security" menu of the Lumiun Boxcontrol panel, you can create an extra layer of network security with just a few clicks using some tools, which you will see in the following lines.
Reputation level
A website's reputation level is measured with a score ranging from 0 to 100. This level is based on several security parameters and indicates whether the site poses any threat to users. The higher the level, the safer the site.
Each user group can receive rules at a different reputation level. It's also possible to disable the filter for one or more groups.

Harmful websites
In the Lumiun BoxSecurity menu, there is also the option to block websites classified as harmful. In just a few clicks, websites belonging to categories such as Hacking, Malware, Phishing, and online fraud can be blocked.

Firewall
The Lumiun Box Firewall acts as an additional layer of protection against attacks and increases the security of the company's network, equipment, systems, and information. Typically, the firewall is responsible for the main defenses at the perimeter of a private network, being an essential component in protecting against unwanted traffic and intrusion attempts.
With the Lumiun BoxFirewall, it is possible to create rules for blocking or allowing packets based on characteristics such as protocols (TCP, UDP, ICMP), ports (individual, lists or port ranges) and source and destination IP addresses of the traffic.
The Lumiun Box control panel allows for centralized management of firewall rules across multiple networks, such as various company branches, all from a single control panel.

Fifth step: Internet access reports
We've reached the fifth and final step in implementing an efficient internet access management and control system in the company: the reports.
The Lumiun Box reporting module helps save time and find information that can be useful for network security and employee productivity.
Dashboard
On the first page of the Lumiun Box control panel, you'll find the Dashboard. Here you can view a summary of important aspects of internet access over a specific period, such as most visited websites, most blocked websites, total visits, total blocked visits, peak access times, and much more.

Real-time access
This report allows you to observe in real time all website accesses occurring on your network. Each record identifies the date and time, website or application, device, and the result of the DNS request.

Security report
Another extremely useful report for companies is the Lumiun Boxsecurity report. It allows you to view the harmful websites that received the most access requests and the devices that made the most requests during a specific period.
This report provides insight into the devices or users who most frequently access websites that may pose a threat to information security. It includes access to phishing sites, fraud, malware, and many others.
If devices with a high volume of accesses to malicious addresses stand out in this report, it is important to analyze which addresses these are. This is an indication that the device may be infected with unwanted software, compromising network security.

Most visited websites
This report displays a pie chart showing the proportion of the most accessed websites, and also includes a table ranking the 100 most visited websites. This chart will give you a broad overview of internet usage on your network.

Accesses by period
Widely used to define and measure internet access blocking and unblocking times in a company, the Lumiun Box access report by period shows the number of accesses during the main periods of the day. This makes it possible to identify the most idle periods and peak internet usage times for the company.
Furthermore, with the available filter options, it's possible to understand individual access behavior by device or user. This information is relevant because it allows for the detection of unusual network behavior.

Report by application
In this type of report, we can obtain information such as total accesses, total blocks, peak access, devices that access the application most frequently, and accesses per period for a given application. Below is an example from the Facebook application.

Use cases
Many IT professionals wonder if an internet access management solution is truly necessary for their company.
Some solutions, such as Lumiun Box, have features that set them apart from others by providing benefits that are consistent with the scenario found in small and medium-sized enterprises in Brazil.
In this way, we seek to reproduce these scenarios so that the professionals in charge can understand in which specific situations the Lumiun Box can be very useful, as you can see below.
Internet access control for remote employees
Systems like Lumiun Boxare capable not only of managing internet access in conventional business environments, with employees physically present on company premises, but also in atypical situations, such as remote workers, or those working from home as it's more commonly known.
With Lumiun Box 's Business VPN, for example, remote employees can access the company's internal files while still adhering to the access policies implemented in the steps described earlier in this material.
In short, it's possible to block websites and applications, instantly check access, set blocking and unblocking times, and provide secure and controlled remote access through the encrypted tunnel of the Lumiun BoxBusiness VPN.
Control internet access across multiple networks from a single panel.
If you are a manager or IT professional at a company with multiple branches, you must have experienced firsthand the difficulty of managing the equipment and internet access across all units.
Each time a new location opens, it's necessary to double the entire investment in resources and services to support that new branch.
This brings us to two common problems that IT professionals encounter: scalability and displacement .
Using Lumiun Box eliminates several difficulties encountered by companies with multiple branches, as you will see in the following lines.

Scalability
With Lumiun Box, it's possible to identify all company networks and manage them remotely from a single panel. Unlike traditional internet access control management solutions, Lumiun Box has an intuitive and easy-to-use panel, generating greater security for the responsible professional and, above all, more agility and organization.
On the dashboard, you can view active networks, connected devices and users, and manage access rules as needed, without having to travel to the location, making the management of the entire network scalable and functional.
Displacement
Traveling to a branch office to resolve a software problem, infection, or access rule configuration is a costly process, not only in monetary terms but also in the time of the responsible professional.
On the Lumiun Boxdashboard, you can quickly check for potential problems arising from unauthorized access, excessive network traffic, and also remotely correct problems.
