With so many different cyber threats, it's no surprise that the number of cyberattacks against companies has increased in recent years, with the ransomware attack that occurred on May 12, 2017 , being one of the largest ever.
However, it is noticeable that a large number of companies are not creating privacy policies or increasing internet security in order to prevent this type of attack or intrusion.
This is according to research conducted by Control Risks , a global consulting firm specializing in political, security, and integrity risk management.
The survey was based on data from 482 business executives, and according to the research:
- 77% of respondents believe that the board of directors is primarily responsible for managing the cybersecurity of organizations.
- 46% of respondents believe that senior executives in their companies do not give due importance to the topic of "cybersecurity".
- 31% of organizations are very or extremely concerned that they will suffer a cyberattack in the next year.
In order to understand how organizations relate to security and cyber threats, the research inquired about the internal structure of companies and their capacity to resolve crises, threats, and cybercrimes. See the data collected below:
- 45% say that assessing and managing cyber risks are their biggest challenges regarding cybersecurity.
- 32% stated that the companies they work for did not conduct a risk assessment of cyber threats to their business in the last year
- Around 28% of companies that suffered a cyberattack faced regulatory or police action, and 26% lost customers.
The survey also indicates that 35% of respondents admit that their company has already suffered a cybersecurity breach.
Another striking finding of the study is that 53% of organizations evaluate the cybersecurity measures of partners and providers solely through contractual clauses.
The report highlights that cyberattacks increased by 11% in the Americas last year, and Latin America, in particular, continues to be a critical target for virtual threats, according to the research. In Mexico alone, attacks increased by 30% .
For the research, executives in the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa were interviewed in early 2017, resulting in the Cyber Security Landscape 2017 report.
Therefore, it can be seen that this topic should be addressed more in the day-to-day operations of companies in general, in order to find strategies and solutions that can help increase internet security for businesses, preventing attacks that could cause enormous losses.
