Infographic: Survey of cybercrimes in Latin America

Microsoft and IDC jointly conducted a broad and comprehensive survey aimed at mapping the world of cybercrime throughout Latin America.

Based on the research, the organizations created a comprehensive infographic with the data collected on cybercrimes, the number of connected devices, and the technologies available to address security risks.

Let's look at some important data from the research:

Number of cyberattacks in 2015

  • Brazil – 27 million attacks
  • Mexico – 16 million attacks
  • Colombia – 5 million attacks

Evolution in the number of devices

  • 2012 – 227 million, of which 38% were mobile.
  • 2016 – 577 million, of which 76% were mobile.
  • 2018 – 700 million, 80% of which are mobile.

Regarding the movement of funds via e-commerce, the research indicates a jump from US$30 billion in 2012 to US$105 billion by 2018.

The infographic also mentions the increased responsibility required of organizations based on regulatory frameworks. This creates new needs for companies regarding measures to combat network security threats.

Also highlighted is the emergence of new technologies as a solution to combat security risks, where three recommendations should be followed when defining security strategies:

  • Protect: Keep information storage locations secure and protect entry points from attacks.
  • Detect: Active security monitoring for rapid detection of attacks and security breaches.
  • Answer: Quick measures to correct vulnerabilities and gaps between attacks and target points.
