The average ransom paid by organizations whose data was encrypted increased almost fivefold last year, to US$812,360, according to a survey commissioned by Sophos from Vanson Bourne, titled “State of Ransomware 2022”. The survey also found that two-thirds (66%) of organizations worldwide were hit by a ransomware attack in 2021, representing a 37% increase compared to 2020.

The cybercriminal group responsible for the Lockbit ransomware operation announced last week that it had hijacked the systems of the Rio de Janeiro State Treasury Department, seizing 420 GB of data from the agency in the process — nearly 2.5 million files, equivalent to about 0.05% of the data stored by the agency.
