The questioning about access to social networks during work is a dilemma present in the daily life of many business managers: blocking access to networks and websites that divert the focus and reduce the productivity of employees, or release access to these systems, aiming at the well -being of employees? It is a difficult question to answer.
Release access to social networks?
Access to social networks is the factor that most contributes to the waste of time at work. In Brazil, more than 90% of internet users have a profile in at least one social network and research point out that 72% of professionals access their social profiles during work. Although social networks are used by people of all ages, the young public leads the use, including the workplace.
One of the things that young people should be aware and concerned is the fact that the work environment is for work and when you spend a long time on social networks, the time is to rethink, because this kind of attitude can be two things: either the professional is accommodated and has no prospect of growth in the company or is very unmotivated.
We know that today with the large amount available from networks, applications and rapid access through numerous devices, access to social networks can occur in various ways. Thus, the manager should decide whether or not to release access to social networks, so it is important to know their team and understand how this use can influence productivity.
Companies can adopt liberal or more conservative policies, but surely the most important point to consider and worked is the maturity of the team. In a mature, productive team and commitment to the company's results, it is possible to adopt a more flexible posture, releasing access without restrictions or at specific times.
Which is not recommended for teams without this maturity, as it will make employees further lose focus on the company's activities and compromise the results.
In this sense, we can conclude that the manager should seek solutions in both directions, develop methods of keeping the team motivated, productive and focused on the company's tasks and results, but at the same time implement an internet access policy according to the team profile, blocking access to avoid waste of time and low productivity if necessary.
Block access to social networks?
If the manager believes that social networks are a threat to your business and your team, because in addition to harming productivity they also make room for viruses, ransomware , phishing , among other security problems.
In a situation like this the ideal is to implement a system for internet management and control . However, the most important thing is to use common sense in the rules, as it is recommended to analyze your team's particularities and define access groups, implementing access rules according to the profile of employees and activities performed differently for each defined group.
For example, the sales industry can use social networks to prospect customer, the HR sector can look for information about networks in networks like LinkedIn and even on Facebook , but the rest of your team has no relationship of activities performed with access to social networks.
In this scenario, the ideal will be access released to the sales sector, controlled access at HR specific times and the rest of the team have blocked access or, as an option, released at some specific time.
Another important point is the gathering of information about the use of the internet, having reports of what is being accessed and analyzing this information in conjunction with team productivity reports and task delivery, can lead to the optimization of your internet access policy.
Make this experience, with blockages and released access, pay attention to employees' behavior, compare results and see how people are able to surprise, both positive and negative.
